Gastritis

What is Gastritis?

Gastritis refers to inflammation of the stomach lining, a condition that can cause discomfort, indigestion, and in severe cases, bleeding. It encompasses various forms, including acute and chronic gastritis, each with distinct causes such as infections, prolonged NSAID [nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - asprin] use, alcohol consumption, or autoimmune disorders. Effective management of gastritis requires accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications.

How Does TCM View Gastritis?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views gastritis as a manifestation of imbalances within the body's energetic systems. TCM practitioners identify specific patterns of disharmony, such as Qi Stagnation, Phlegm-Heat, or Yang Deficiency, to understand the root cause of gastritis. This holistic approach focuses on restoring balance and promoting overall health rather than just alleviating symptoms.

Common Causes of Gastritis According to TCM

In TCM, gastritis can arise from various underlying patterns:

  • Rebellious Liver Qi: When Liver Qi becomes disruptive and invades the Stomach, it impedes the descending function of the Stomach Qi. This disruption can lead to symptoms like acid reflux, nausea, and vomiting.

  • Phlegm-Heat in the Middle Burner: This pattern involves the accumulation of Phlegm and Heat in the Stomach, causing symptoms such as burning sensation, excessive hunger, or feeling of fullness after eating a small amount.

  • Wind-Cold or Interior Cold: When Cold enters the body, it can affect the Stomach, causing sudden onset symptoms like sharp stomach pain, aversion to cold, and preference for warmth.

These TCM herbal formulas are selected based on the individual's specific pattern of disharmony, ensuring a personalized approach to treatment that addresses both the root causes and the symptoms of gastritis. By restoring balance and promoting the body's natural healing mechanisms, TCM aims to provide effective relief and long-term management of gastritis.
